The effect of self-related humor on convergent and divergent thinking

Creativity has a wide range of applications, including everyday problem solving, science, the arts, and economic development in today’s competitive world. Scientists are increasingly focusing on enhancing creative output by creating an innovation-friendly environment through the use of humor, but it is unclear which types of humor promote creativity. Dr. Md. Shahinoor Rahman from the Department of Psychology investigated the effects of various types of humor on creativity. They discovered that self-enhancing humour improved both convergent and divergent thinking (originality, fluency, and flexibility), but had no effect on self-defeating humour. These findings encourage creativity in education, organizations, and government agencies.
